I'm considering ordering the USB Bit-Whacker kit from SparkFun

If anyone local into electronics tinkering (for fun and/or profit) is considering getting anything from them, I'd be willing to combine the orders to even out shipping costs.

To anyone local with a Sam's Club membership:

On your next trip to Sam's club, can I convince any of you to pick me up a case of Dentyne Ice Cool Frost Soft Chew gum?

I would, of course, reimburse you for it.

Oh, and it's also worth mentioning to anyone who goes looking for it: The packaging has changed somewhat from what's listed on the sam's club page. Here's the new look.

Looking at the back of a bag of "America's Choice" (a common "generic" brand) gummy dinosaurs, it says "Product of Canada".

The back of a bag of "America's Choice" caramels reads "Product of Brazil".

Apparently, America chooses not to buy American.

The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people.
As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children,
the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.

I left work early yesterday, picked Janet up from her office, and we drove to the airport.

After a relatively uneventful stay at the airport and an equally uneventful flight, we are in Orlando.

Janet's youngest brother and one of her cousins both graduated from High School this year. So, rather than trying to drag family to both graduations, they're having a joint celebration / family reunion here. They rented a couple 5-6 bedroom houses for the week. (we're only staying till Tuesday morning) There are a few group activities planned, (I think) but we have the freedom to say "We want to do XXX, does anyone want to tag along? No? Then, see ya!"

We land back in Detroit Tuesday afternoon. If there's anything going on back home between now and then, assume we will be unavailable for it.

Joy.

Last week, I posted about a (ahem) customer visit that I was supposed to go on, but got cancelled.

What I didn't know until just a few minutes ago was that Mike rescheduled it for tomorrow.

My workload doesn't really look any different from this time last week. But I have stuff that can be worked on using my laptop in his back seat.

ow.

Got back from Home Depot a while ago, where I bought 33 0.5 cubic foot bags of landscaping marble chips and 8 40-lb bags of topsoil. Figure it was well over half a ton of stuff..

Had help getting the marble chips into the van. Loaded the soil myself. When I got home, nobody was home, so I had to unload it all myself. Dirt's now in the garage, and the rocks are stacked on the side of the house.

Oddly enough, it's not my back or my arms that is sore... it's my ankles.

How fun.

I am apparently being dragged to some random place north of Grand Rapids tomorrow to put on a dog & pony show for some prospective customers.

I'm so excited that I need a new pair of shorts.

[EDIT:]
Mike just came in to my office. He apparently just talked to my boss, who informed him that I have entirely too much going on right now to be dragged out to give some prospective customer a knobjob in the hopes that we'll get no more than a handful of unit sales out of.

So I'm not going tomorrow. And Mike is going to try to reschedule to some time after the Memorial day holiday.

I recently installed a new (refurbed) IBM NetVista computer here at the office. We decided we wanted more RAM in that box, so I ordered another stick for it, (the description lied - it came with one 512MB stick instead of two 256MB sticks) which got here this morning.

I installed the RAM, and left the case off when I turned it back on.

Everything looks normal when I turn on the system.... and then both the CPU fan and the system case fan stop spinning while Windows is booting. When I shut down the computer, just before the system turns itself off, the fans start spinning again, briefly.

This behaviour is 100% repeatable.

My assumption is that the system is configured to look at the temperature sensors, and as long as the temps are below a certain point, it keeps the fans turned off to minimize system noise.

The system has been on and (mostly) idle for a couple hours now, with the cover off. I've been going in every so often and touching the CPU heatsink (after grounding myself to the case) to check the temperature. It's only slightly warm to the touch.

Here's to seven years together, and many more to come.

Happy anniversary.
Love you.

A while back, I obtained a 1U Compaq server from [livejournal.com profile] noweb4u so that I could play with it and see if I wanted to get a couple to Colo.

I *finally* managed to get a usable operating system installed.

See, when Ubuntu 6.06 installs, it doesn't have support for the cpqarray RAID controller in the RAMFS used to boot the kernel. I had to follow the instructions in comment #4 on this thread to get the OS installed and booting.

Janet and I had set aside this weekend to take inventory of all of the products in our basement. We were expecting to have to spend all weekend doing it.

Surprisingly, it went MUCH more quickly than we thought it would. It was further accelerated when [livejournal.com profile] mocchiherder, and later, [livejournal.com profile] meecie arrived to pitch in. We had saved counting incense for last, because that required the least amount of thinking / discussion about how we were going to account for it. So, when they arrived, that's what we had them work on.

We started the inventory at about 9:30AM, and because of their help, we finished at about 9:30PM. (minus maybe 1 hour for lunch and another for dinner.)

Ladies, thank you very much. (again)

[EDIT:] I accidentally had the wrong LJ userid for [livejournal.com profile] meecie
